Support begins with understanding
No two children learn in quite the same way. At Hollygirt, our small classes and close relationships give us the time to understand each pupil -their strengths, the barriers they may face and the support that helps them move forward.
We have experience supporting pupils with a range of special educational needs and disabilities, including dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD, autism, anxiety and some physical needs. Our approach is flexible, thoughtful and rooted in empathy, with the aim of helping every pupil flourish academically and personally.
Joining Hollygirt with an identified need
Finding the right school matters. Before offering a place, we’ll work closely with your child, your family and relevant professionals to understand their needs and consider whether Hollygirt can support them effectively.
Noticing when something changes
Sometimes, a need becomes apparent after a pupil has joined us. When this happens, their teachers work closely with our SENDCo, following a graduated approach to understand the barrier and put appropriate support in place.
This may include:
- High-quality, adaptive classroom teaching
- Support sheets and targeted learning strategies
- Small-group or individual interventions
- Examination access arrangements, where appropriate
We’ll monitor progress, listen to the pupil and keep families involved throughout.
Making the curriculum work for the pupil
Regular assessment helps us understand how each pupil is progressing and where teaching or support may need to change.
In Years 10 and 11, some pupils with specific learning needs may benefit from studying a reduced number of subjects. This creates more time for focused support and helps them work towards meaningful GCSE outcomes that reflect their individual strengths.
Could Hollygirt be right for my child?
We want every child who joins Hollygirt to feel safe, happy and properly supported. That means being open about what our school can - and cannot - provide.
As a small school on a historic site, we may not be able to meet significant physical-access requirements or provide an extensive level of one-to-one classroom support. We encourage families to speak with us before beginning the registration process so we can explore your child’s needs honestly and carefully.
The question isn’t simply whether a child can attend Hollygirt. It’s whether they will thrive here.
