More than one way to think

A question can become a conversation, then an idea worth following. Our academic approach gives pupils the knowledge, support and freedom to think deeply.

At Hollygirt, we want children to enjoy learning, feel confident in their abilities and achieve outcomes that reflect their strengths. Our academic approach is supportive, based on a strong understanding of how children learn best. By promoting curiosity, independence and resilience, we help pupils make progress and prepare with confidence for whatever comes next.

Future-ready learning

To support this, our teaching helps pupils develop the knowledge, habits and wider skills they will need to thrive in a changing world. Learning in a Hollygirt classroom encourages:

  • Critical thinking, curiosity, and confident problem-solving.
  • Collaboration, communication and independence, so pupils can work effectively with others and understand how they learn best.
  • Creativity, adaptability and digital fluency, preparing pupils for modern learning and future pathways.
  • Reflection, global awareness and the confidence to engage thoughtfully with the world around them.

Year 6: Strong Beginnings

Pupils build secure foundations, confident learning habits and a sense of belonging.

Year 6 at Hollygirt is all about building confidence, developing independence and preparing for the exciting transition to Senior School. Pupils strengthen their core skills, embrace new challenges and grow in maturity, resilience and self-belief.
Our broad and engaging curriculum encourages pupils to think deeply, ask questions and develop a genuine love of learning. Whether investigating historical events, carrying out scientific enquiries, learning a language, performing on stage or taking part in sport, pupils are encouraged to discover their strengths and pursue their interests.

As an independent school, we do not prepare pupils for SATs. This means there is no unnecessary pressure of external testing, allowing learning to remain broad, enriching and enjoyable throughout the entire year. Instead, we focus on ensuring pupils are well prepared academically, socially and emotionally for the next stage of their education.

A particular strength of Hollygirt is our flexible approach to transition. Rather than following a traditional primary model until the end of Year 6, we can gradually introduce greater independence and elements of Senior School life as the year progresses. This approach is carefully tailored to each Year 6 cohort, enabling pupils to become familiar with new routines, expectations and opportunities in a supportive and age-appropriate way. By the end of Year 6, pupils are confident, independent learners who are ready to make the most of the many opportunities awaiting them in Senior School. By the time they reach Year 7, pupils feel confident, prepared and ready to thrive.

Years 7 to 9: Explore and Connect

A broad curriculum helps pupils discover strengths, make connections and prepare for GCSE choices.

This stage at Hollygirt is all about exploration, confidence‑building and discovering talents. It’s an exciting three‑year journey where pupils get to try a broad mix of subjects, develop strong learning habits and gain the solid foundation they’ll need for success at GCSE.

By experiencing such a wide range of subjects, pupils are empowered to make informed, enthusiastic choices about their GCSE options in the middle of Year 9 - knowing what they enjoy, what they’re good at and where their passions lie.

Our blend of academic challenge, creativity and practical learning means pupils don’t just study subjects - they experience them. Whether they’re investigating in the science labs, expressing big ideas in Drama, creating in the workshop, cooking in Food and Nutrition, or exploring global cultures in languages, every day brings new opportunities to grow.

By the time pupils reach the end of Year 9, they’re confident, well‑prepared and ready to embark on the GCSE courses that inspire them most.

Years 10 and 11: focus and independence

Clear teaching, personal feedback and thoughtful guidance support pupils through GCSEs and towards their next step.

Pupils begin shaping their own learning journey, choosing subjects that spark their interest, play to their strengths and open doors for their future. These two years are purposeful, inspiring and highly supportive ensuring every pupil feels confident as they work towards their GCSEs and beyond. Small classes mean teachers can notice what each pupil needs: reassurance, a fresh explanation or more stretch.

Our teachers know each pupil well and offer excellent guidance throughout Key Stage 4. With small class sizes, personalised feedback, and a nurturing environment, pupils develop strong study skills, resilience and academic independence. The courses they follow not only prepare them for GCSE success but also provide a solid foundation for post‑16 options, whether they move on to A‑levels, vocational qualifications or specialist pathways.
